What is the best program for writing books? I use LibreOffice the most because it came on my computer but once I got further along a tried a free trial of Microsoft word and it was nice for the PDF files and being able to change the format size.

For me, discovering Scrivener was a revelation. Up to that time I’d been using Word. I am not organised and I lost much time with Word looking for documents, fragments, research cut and pastes etc. I am using Scrivener 3.0.3 for Mac and for Windows. The Mac version has the smoothest interface and user friendly features. If necessary I can import/export between the two. Scrivener allows my disorganisation free rein and has easy-to-find spaces to place all kinds of material and lovely ways of finding stuff such as a ‘cork board’. Somehow it has all the tools necessary to make life as a writer simple and stupid and carry a lot of the heavy lifting with nifty features that Word simply doesn’t have. It uses many of the general features that Word users will be familiar with and without all of the bells and whistles of Word which are surplus to requirements for most writers. I also use Scrivener for cutting and pasting web-based articles, recipes, selections from pdf files and so on. So I have different ‘projects’ for different purposes. I now use Scrivener far more than I use Word for almost all purposes, including letters and emails. As far as lay-out goes, there is nothing I’ve encountered so far that Scrivener can’t do, although it lacks the positioning refinement of Word when using graphic material. Additionally, by the same stable of creators as Scrivener, I use Scapple - a mind map, which for my disorganised brain is one of the best around (and I’ve tried a few!). All the best!
