What has changed in the high school class rooms since the 90s?

I don’t go back as far as the 1950s but some changes from the 1960s. textbooks weigh way more than then. Back then, there were fewer pictures and less white space. T are now a danger to smaller kids physically. my school had one black teacher. Town was about 25% black. Black teacher taught art, which I took—he was a good art teacher, but the class was full of boys who just wanted to take a course with a black teacher. Meanwhile, the history teacher I worked with at a summer job was excrutiatingly racist. I wasn’t very racially aware, but it was just bad. Courses were more sexist (boys shop, girls home ec) although it was optional in high school—mandatory in middle school. There was more vocational education. You could graduate as a qualified secretary or mechanic without any education beyond high school. AP classes were tracked—you couldn’t just enroll. It was super crowded. I generally skipped lunch, because the lunch periods were shorter than the time it took to go through the lunch line (and skipping meals was not something I had an issue with then.) Towns were building schools. Kids 16 and over had after school/weekend jobs far more than now, whether or not college prep.

Write on PDF: All You Need to Know

This is not good for your mental and physical well-being. Kids don’t learn how to organize their lives effectively in terms of work-life balance. You still need to balance everything—school, sports/varsity, extracurriculars, friendships. You still can’t just take a year off. I did take college courses that would have paid for my school. I was lucky. In some ways, school prepared me to get a job at a big corporation. There were certain things I could do to prepare myself for it—a certain amount of networking, certain financial literacy skills, etc. There are certainly disadvantages to college, including a loss of the support structure and the increased stress of being more academically demanding, but I think kids should have options other than school. I don’t feel I was treated with respect in some ways. I have a lot, or maybe even a lot more, respect for white people who.
