So I use Microsoft Word when writing my short stories, thinking about turning my short stories into a book every time I try to make a PDF all my work gets messed up, how can fix it or keep it from happening?

Don't take anything I say a gospel, or even useful, but my main manuscript is being written in “One Note”… mainly because 80%+ has been written on my phone or online tablet and each “chapter” can be contained in a single “section” of a larger Note. It does get somewhat cumbersome after 100k words, but is super useful before then. When I am interested in submitting something with an actual format, I will export to Word, Format, then Submit. You really are not going to have decent formatting until you do your submission draft formatting. Editing screws formatting every time, so don't even try. When your Final is ready for submission, THEN see what it MIGHT look like post Editorial markup. It won't, but it's a thought. That is why there are guidelines for submission that don't make any sense for publication… because what you submit is not what will be published. Your Editor and the Publisher will decide how it should look, not you. Sure, t might be OK with your chapter breaks, but your pagination is pointless. T own pagination. So, don't sweat it.

Write on PDF: All You Need to Know

That being said, it does get a bit of a challenge because you just don't want to be seen as a whiny snob who says “but the book needs more pagination.” You need to go for more pages, because not every section needs every page. That being said, we really can't be expected to just sit around waiting for page length to catch up. With so many pages in this thing, it seems like we'll never get anywhere. Yes, we will. The point is, a final should not be what you publish, because your editing and art still have an effect. Just think, if it's a complete mess after 30k pages, it just got exponentially bigger. … … … … So, if your book is 100 pages long, and it's not being edited due to the sheer length and number, then we're all getting very frustrated..
